Hanging Around

Hand-knit socks
February 2014
I wear hand-knit wool socks around the house every day from September to June. During the summer, I usually go barefoot in the house and wear sandals or sneakers outside.

Dirty socks are placed in the zipped-mesh bag, shown hanging on the left, and the bag is tossed in with the regular wash but not in the dryer. Often I drape the socks on a collapsible dryer in front on the electric baseboard heater to dry.

Recently, I inspected all my hand-knit socks, and those that were showing some major wear were tossed. Other than air-drying, I don't baby my hand-knit socks, and all have been worn for several years. At last count, I had over a dozen pair of long-cuffed, hand-knit socks and seven pair of short-cuffed, hand-knit socks.

Do you air-dry your hand-knit socks? How many pair are in your sock drawer?

  1. That is exactly how I treat my socks. I have one pair, tho, that are starting to felt. It is a different yarn Thani usually use: much softer. Fairly soon I will start wearing them like slippers.

  2. Not all of the wool I've used is superwash, so I soak them in no rinse Eucalan. Then I then spin them out in the washing machine and air dry.

  3. I only own 1 pair of hand knit socks but I air dry them as well. They are really thick cotton yarn (not very soft). as I try not to wear any wool up next to my skin. I love wool but it doesn't love me.

  6. At last count I had 75 pair and Steve had 10. I hand wash some and others I wash like you do. Some of the more rugged ones can even handle going in the dryer, but I don't do that very often.

You have quite a colorful selection.

  7. It pains me to toss out socks that I knit, but recently I did just that. I think I have 8 pair that I use mostly for work. I am a barefoot person as much as possible too in the warmer months

  11. ummm - at last count I had 65+ pairs. For the last 5 years I have knit 12+ pair of socks per year - or more. And yes - I baby them, I hand wash and hang dry mostly because I've had washable wool felt in the washer. it only takes once. But my daughter throws all her handknit socks in the washer and dryer and they don't shrink. So go figure. g

  12. I do air dry my hand knit socks, which I wear from around December to April. I hang mine on trouser hangers with clips on them--one pair to each hanger.

Do you reinforce your heels and toes with nylon or cotton thread? I always do and it makes them wear really well.

  13. I put mine in the washer and dryer but I think I'll stop that because I'm finding some that need repair. I have plenty of sock blockers that I could dry them on. I just got lazy. I think I'll buy a darning egg and learn to fix them. I hate to throw them away because so much time and work goes into making them.

  14. Hum, you asked for quantity of hand knits. Sad to say I know exactly how many. Two wool socks and one cotton. But I do have three or four skeins that want to be socks. The pair I'm ignoring on my needles may work for the spring, summer and fall. Too hot here most of the year for wool. Hum, spring is on its way so may be I should try to get a bit more knitting done.

  15. I air dry too, and I honestly don't know how many I have.

  16. I wash mine in a mesh bag too and lay mine flat to dry. I like your method better...seems like they would dry more quickly.
