Back in Time - Homecoming Royalty

Homecoming Royalty
Half-time presentation
Fall 1967
In the 1960s, Homecoming Royalty toured the football field at half-time via convertible. Through the years, I've seen the royalty presentation on Autumn days when the sky was a gorgeous, clear blue; others, when huge snow flakes flew through the air. Some years, the wind simply howled. Despite the weather, the Queen and her attendants dressed in formal gowns for the half-time presentation, that is until the mid-80s when it became fashionable to simply wear slacks and a sweater.

The school band, shown in the background, often played at football and basketball games. The band also marched in parades at Homecoming, the Fremont County Fair, and Cheyenne Frontier Days.

The music teacher at the time was Clayton Arnold, and his wife (Sammie) was the accompanist for the school choir. Under Mr. Arnold's direction, the band and choir often received Superior ratings at District Music Festival.

How was football royalty presented when you were in school?

  1. I don't remember when I was in high school, but here in Needville the Homecoming Court is presented on the football field during the Homecoming football game (either pre-game or halftime, I forget). The band is playing softly in the background and the girls are announced on the speaker and escorted to the sideline by someone of their choosing. The queen, which is voted on by the student body, is announced at this time also. All the candidates were formal gowns.

  2. No football, and no homecoming at the small school I attended. They still don't have football, but have a marvelous basketball history, and they have started having homecoming basketball games, with "royalty" presented.

  4. That is exactly the way they did it when I was in high school. I was in the band instead of riding in the convertible. DH loves to tell people about the football players I dated. At the time they gave new meaning to the term "empty headed." Football was the only thing on their minds. Now they are a doctor, two lawyers and an accountant, who like me is still empty headed! LOL!!

  5. I went to high school in the mid-to-late '80s, and our royalty wore formal attire. Or at least... the girls did. The boys, usually football players, came out in their stained uniforms and then quickly retreated to the locker room again.

  6. Ours was the same, but the "royalty" rode on a float at the parade in town the night before the big game. That was always the night before Thanksgiving. Big parade and a bonfire to burn the other teams mascot in effigy. Then at 10 AM on Thanksgiving we had the big game. DH went to one of the rival schools. I went to the other. It makes for interesting Thanksgiving mornings still for us even though we live 1500 miles away from "home".

Thanks for bringing back some VERY sweet memories.

  7. This year is actually the first time that I've attended a school with a football team. Although my college had a pretty good rugby team, which is more fun to watch for me. I love the car, definitely designed to arrive in style.

  8. They rode a float in the Homecoming Parade and then later were seated at the Football game and introduced during half time. They use to borrow local ladies furs for the royalty..so they were very formally dressed:)
