Sign at Todaiji Temple
Nara, Japan
April 2012
Sheila's photo illustrates that the Japanese allow pets on the grounds of the Tadaiji Temple, but dogs must be carried and not on a leash.

Sheila mentioned a wooden column with a hole through its base and that it is a popular belief that those who can squeeze through the hole will gain enlightenment. Sheila was adventurous and made it through the tunnel.

Sheila's other photos can be seen here.

  1. Nice to see service dogs are excluded from being carried. Sensible.

  2. Well, that's interesting. I guess you wouldn't want to bring along a large dog! Nice that you are able to bring your pets though; I like that.

  3. Carried and NOT on a leash? So... I can't have Gg's little 5' leash clipped to her harness, just in case?

  4. How interesting. I guess they figure a dog on a leash will mistake it for a dog park? What are the stairs they don't want photographed?

  7. That is very interesting about the no leash. I wonder what their reasoning for it is.

  8. The Japanese have the best signage ever, no doubt about it. I have a friend who lived there for two years for university and he saw his share of great signs too. Also, I loved hearing about your thoughts on beauty, I completely agree with you!
