Beauty

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread,
places to play in and pray in,
where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.
~ John Muir ~

Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything that is beautiful;
for beauty is God's handwriting - a wayside sacrament.
Welcome it in every fair face,
in every fair sky,
in every fair flower,
and thank God for it as a cup of blessing.

 ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~

How do you define Beauty?

  1. I like these quotes. Muir's quote makes me think of our place in Matagorda. It is our place to "play in and pray in." Emerson's sums it all up with "beauty is God's handwriting."

  2. That's a very difficult discussion, isn't it? Your quotes are fabulous. Beauty to me is often very different. My dog sleeping on my loveseat is beautiful to me. Certain flowers, seeing the Mountains, people - but that's very hard to define. Peace - with oneself. g

  3. Beauty is hard to define, but is all around. I particularly enjoy recognizing inner beauty--when goodness and light shine through despite struggles.

  4. Wonderful post... Great question.... beauty can be seen even in the 'unbeautiful'....it can be more than what the eye sees...

  6. I love the quote by John Muir. It's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think everyone can see the beauty in that iris. Some can also see the beauty in a wrinkled old man hunched over the arms of his wheelchair as his feet pull him through the nursing home - the beauty is in the memories of time spent with him when he was young, strong, and wise.

  7. My favorite beauty quote is from Keats -

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty," – that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.

It's not the most descriptive, but it's my favorite.

  8. Beautiful quote. Beautiful flower image.
I define Beauty as without blemish. ONce leaves get to browning on a plant or molding,
once rust starts on a car, once clothes begin to fade...
the beauty is gone for me.
And I define Beauty in Nature mostly!!

  10. Flowers are definitely beautiful to me. I don't think that I could ever list all the things/thoughts/actions in this world that I think are beautiful. I'd love to hear more about your thoughts on the subject.

  11. Beauty is what pleases my eye on any given moment.

  12. I find beauty in the faces of my children and grandchildren. The children grow more beautiful as they age, as I see grey on their temples and as I see them make decisions that are well thought out and logical. Beautiful!!

    A beautiful post Nancy!!
