Winter Set

My nephew's wife wants a hat, scarf, and mitten set. She purchased the yarn and the pattern and intended to knit it herself. However, she determined that she could not understand the pattern and asked if I would make it for her.

The pattern calls for double-stranded, bulky yarn and knit on size 15 and 10.5 needles. She purchased a boucle yarn. Once I started knitting the hat, I knew the yarn was going to give me problems: it was nearly impossible to see the stitches and sometimes one of the strands would slip.

I breathed a sigh of relief once I finished the 72-inch scarf. Earlier, I determined that I would not even attempt to make the mittens with the boucle. I found a dark purple acrylic yarn in my stash that matches the boucle very well. The red in the boucle doesn't allow the solid mitten to photograph correctly, but trust me it is a very close match.

The second mitten will not take long, completing Katie's winter set.

  2. Boucle is such a hard one to work with, isn't it? I once tried to crochet with it... NOT. What kind of finish do you use on your mittens? Do you dec on each side and then graft off? or do you use a star finish? I have been knitting lots of mittens for charity and want to change up stuff: I'm getting a bit bored with the pattern I am using.

  3. What a challenge to knit with double stranded boucle! That's something you would only do for someone you love very much. It's a pretty set. You are wise to use a different yarn for the mittens.

  4. BEAUTIFUL. I HATE USING THAT YARN WHEN I CROCHET TO. IF I USE A GRANNY SQUARE PATTERN IT'S NOT ALL THAT BAD.

  5. I don't do much knitting or crochet anymore but while I love all the fancy yarns they sure are a lot harder for me as to work with.

    The set looks good together!

  6. What a beautiful set! I'm not even a knitter, but I could tell by the picture that the boucle yarn was a pain in the butt to work with! You did wonderful with it, though! :)
