Bloody Hell Pond
Beppu, Japan
April 1980
The red color of this onsen (hot springs) is from a large concentration of iron. While Beppu is an area with many bath houses, this pond was only for viewing.

The abundance of steam and hot springs in this area reminded me of Thermopiles, WY and Yellowstone National Park, also in WY.

  1. A very dramatic picture - eerie was the perfect word for it. Could you smell the iron in the air around it?

  4. A beautiful photo, but I wouldn't want to get close enough to fall into that pond!

  6. Cool. ! We get spring fog around here due to lake Michigan retaining cold and spring warm winds colliding. Reminds me of our fog

  7. I can see why they would come up with that name for it!

  8. Nope, the sulfur springs in WVA are weird enough. Soaking in iron makes me think I would come out like a red tin man!

  9. It is eerie, and beautiful. BTW, this is my first comment with the new email. Crossed fingers.

  10. That is really spooky looking with the steam rising. I imagine it didn't smell too great, but I wonder if it would be bad for you to soak in the iron. Would you come out stained? LOL

  11. Interesting photo, Nancy. I wonder what the rest of the water in that area is like. Reminds me of summers in northern WI when my white socks would gradually turn orange from washing them in the water there. I can see why the pond was only for viewing!
