Christmas Cheer & Winter Danger

Laramie is abuzz with Christmas cheer and activities. A local landscaping business decorated a section of a popular park with a walk-through display. Even though the temperatures are frigid, it’s well worth wandering among the displays. The senior center has hosted several concerts this month: a choir, a trio of university professors from the music department, and a group of 11 young cellists from a string academy.

Despite all the holiday activities, an extreme threat is on the horizon. Tonight an arctic air mass will settle over Wyoming plunging temperatures near -30° F.  Once the windchill is factored, temperatures could easily be near -45° to -65° F. Officials are warning frostbite and hypothermia can occur within mere minutes. I plan to hunker down at home and pray the electricity stays on because I have electric heat. The subzero temperatures are predicted through Saturday and possibly into next week.

  1. Stay safe and hopefully warm. The news here said we are in for the coldest Christmas in over 20 years. While we have gas heat it has an electric igniter. Hoping we don't have to rely on the woodstove.

Tomorrow and Friday are supposed to bring heavy rains and 50 mph winds.

  4. OH I really hope your electricity stays on! And I worry when it gets down to freezing!

  5. Remember to open cabinet doors so the heat from the room will keep the pipes from freezing. Better still, turn the faucets onto a drip. Stay safe and warm.

  6. Beautiful lights. We are supposed to get a big storm over the weekend, so it could be a quiet cozy Christmas for us

  7. I saw that on the Weather Channel this morning. We are getting ready for the big chill also. It will be in the single digits on Christmas which must seem like spring to you all way up north. We stacked wood up near the house all afternoon yesterday in case of any more power outages.
I love those wrapped trees. Someone near my parent's old house used to do that to the trees on the road leading to the beach and I loved seeing it as we left their house on Christmas night.

  8. The lights are beautiful! I've been hearing about the Big Chill coming for Christmas. I'm sure you're stocked up and here's hoping that the electricity stays on--hopefully as long as there isn't an ice storm you will be ok!

  9. Those temperatures seem really brutal, as of course they are. Do hope the storm doesn't affect your area too much, and the power stays on. Keep safe and warm.

  10. Hunkering down is the best plan--we aren't going to be as extreme but very cold for us (24*) and people, plants and animals need to take shelter!!! The lights are so pretty--nice you got to enjoy them before the big arctic blast hits! Take care!

  12. I guess I shouldn't complain about our 8 degrees? It's a perfect time to hunker down and maybe do some knitting and quilting.
