Monday Chores

"Monday"

It seems fitting to post "Monday" on a Monday.

Several weeks ago, I visited the UW Art Museum, and this watercolor painting caught my eye. I love everything about it -- the colors, the scene in particular.

I have many memories of wash day when I was young, but sadly no photographs. Most of the clothes on our clothesline were denim jeans, work shirts, sheets, towels, a few dresses and some underwear. Occasionally, coveralls, were also hung to dry.

  1. Love that painting. There were always clothes hanging on the line to dry at my house. And, my aunt in VT, would hang sheets on a line on her porch - even in the winter!

  2. Monday is wash day! What an evocative quilt, of my former life!

  3. I too have fond memories of wash day. My mom made a real production of it and she enjoyed every minute. I wish I could have a clothes line but between the shedding, mite filled trees and having no sun it wouldn't work.

  4. The ladies in the painting are working hard! Yes Monday is wash day, I have bath towels in the wash now:)

  6. That is such a pretty painting. Monday is a perfect name for it. We had no dryer when I was a child and a wringer washing machine. Every Monday we did laundry, (and received some pinched fingers from the wringer in the process). Our clothes were hung outside on the line all year, even in subzero weather. The original freeze dried! :-)

  7. What a perfect painting for today!!!! Thanks. I have lots of fond memories of my Mom hanging laundry and playing in and around the wet clothes--we probably had more fun than she did! lol

  8. Love it! I sure do remember washday and the time when Mom caught her arm in the wringer. Great painting! Oh, and that hat pattern was designed, I think, to honor Ukraine, and that's why the sunflower is part of the design. I thought it was a fun project and a great way to include their national flower. It's a fun knit, and I plan to do it again.
