Could You Live With It?

I pass this house frequently on my morning walks and recently noticed a realtor's sign in the front yard. Admittedly, this area does not get a lot of rain, but snow melt also needs to be routed away from houses via gutters and downspouts.

In my opinion, this house's gutter configuration looks like an accident waiting to happen. The walk, shown in the photo, curves toward the front door along the wall of the garage. The gutter downspout can be fastened to the corner of the garage where the house number is visible, but how convenient would it be to dash out and lower it when it rains or to have the downspout blocking the walkway for months on end. Clearly, the architect did not consider the garage runoff and the gutters necessary to deal with it when designing the house.

Would you purchase a house with this design quirk? Would you think to assess such items when house hunting?

  1. This is clearly a problem that needs to be fixed so if I loved the house I would first need to know what would be involved to fix this first.

  2. I'd not even notice. Fireman , however, would be ALL OVER THAT

  3. I'm surprised if the house would pass inspection with the gutter like that. It could safely be turned to run the water down the driveway. That's how our front downspout is directed. Having a downspout across a walk way is just asking for a law suit.

  4. That is definitely an eyesore and a hazard. But if the rest of the house was good, then I guess I would figure out a solution that didn't involve the gutter laying across the sidewalk.

My husband always unrolls our sump pump hose across our front sidewalk in the spring - and it drives me nuts!! Wish the previous homeowner had buried it like the neighbors did.

  5. That would be one of the first things I'd get fixed!

  6. Oh I saw that and it was an instant, "What the heck?" I am hoping it's a temporary set up, that its like that only when needed ...

  7. I guarantee I would trip over that every day :0

  8. Obviosly they didn't know what they were doing, the gutter is misplaced and will never pass an inspection. No I would not buy it..what else is wrong with it would be my concern:)

  9. That certainly makes the "What were they thinking?!" list. I would certainly want that fixed before purchase.

  10. Is it always across the sidewalk like that, or is it hinged to fall down when it rains?

  11. Hmmm....looks like an accident in the making to me. At least I'd trip over it for sure!

  12. Looks like the general contractor/builder didn't think this one through. I'm sure there's a much better solution than an extension on the downspout.

  13. I would trip over it while I was looking at something else and that would be the end of that. But no... that's unacceptable. If everything else was perfect, that would have to be corrected as part of the deal.

  14. My kids would be sure enough to face plant over that. However, it could be a good price negotiation point.
