I Understand. . .

Leonard and I have a lot in common - trying to learn something that is beyond our grasp. For Leonard, it is knitting; for me, crochet. I enrolled a class and completed the assigned "homework" ; however, the instructor cancelled the second session and eventually the third session was cancelled, too. It was probably for the best, as the hook just did not "fit" my hand like knitting needles.

After that experience, I added a single crochet to a hand-knit hat. Working with the awkward hook took me several hours - much too long to make me even hopeful that I will master the skill. I'm sure a child could have finished in less than half the time it took me to add the edge. I may attempt crocheting again, but today, I understand Leonard.

What skill has you baffled?

  1. Knitting! I can crochet until the cows come home, but knitting is a mystery!

  2. Reading patterns sometimes is baffling, but then I begin to wonder if maybe it's not "me". Maybe it's them. LOL

But, I love the cartoon! ;-)

Hang in there with that crochet hook. You might find it falls into a rythmn right soon.

  3. Sewing!! But you aren't alone; I have a local friend who is a talented knitter, but several people have tried in vain to teach her to crochet.

  4. I couldn't crotchet at first either, and then realized it was how I was holding the hook. The gal teaching me had me holding it like it was a pancake spatula, with the hook pointing towards the pan. When I turned it around and held it like a pen, with the hook (or ball point end) facing me, it was like a whole other world! How did they have you holding the hook?

  5. When I first learned to knit I too had trouble getting comfortable with the needles in my hand and then I moved them to the same position as my crochet hook and it made all the difference in the world...maybe the same could work in reverse for you.

  6. Don't give up. I know a private teacher that would love to help you get started and she works cheap too!

  7. Ha, ha, ha; great cartoon. I bet that private teacher could get you comfortable with crochet!! I can do the very basics to put an edge on a project, but that's about the extent of my interest in crocheting.

  8. But now you know enough crochet to do a provisional crocheted cast-on!

  9. I know... the way they show to hold a crochet hook just doesn't work for me, so I hold it like a knitting needle and can crochet up a storm with no dropped stitches. Why not give that a try and see if it helps? Good luck! I was thinking the other day that I needed to do some crochet... it works up SOOOO much faster than knitting socks. Perhaps I will crochet some of my hand-spun yarn, WHEN I get back to working on that!

  10. Oh poor Leonard! That is so funny!! I have never enjoyed crochet because it hurts my hands and wrists. I refuse to do anything that hurts. Like you, I will add a row of crochet to a hat or even an afghan, but that is all. I am awed by knitters who can switch back and forth from needles to hook without an "ouch." Yep, crochet is definitely the one that escapes me!

  11. LACE AND THE INSTRUCTIONS TO REVERSE THE SHAPING... just can't do either...
Given up. .Life's too short. I can crochet though.....but it is a wrist hurter. I have to be pushed to even do a picot edge.

So you can't crochet .....I love you anyway!

  12. Funny - just like me! I have a daughter who crochets beautifully and I guess I could too if I tried - but somehow crochet just doesn't speak to me!

  13. Love your pic! Anything mechanical and most math is beyond me. I've recently bought yarn for blankie for Natalie...it'll be for Christmas. And it is crocheted. We'll see how well that goes! I may be joining you in hanging up the hooks.

  15. Baffled=Tatting I always wanted to learn how. I learned to knit first then I learned to crochet. I like to crochet better than knitting. I had a Learn all about Tatting booklet around here someplace:)
